Samsung Galaxy S3 – Galaxy S III will have 12mp camera, 2GB ram and more

  • Sharebar

Galaxy S3

Well leaked information on the highly anticipated brother of the Samsung Galaxy S II, the Samsung Galaxy S3 will compete against the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 next year. The Samsung Galaxy S III will heavily challenge Apple’s handsets, as the Galaxy SII did well against the iPhone 4 resulting in multiple lawsuits back and forth between the 2 big companies, Apple and Samsung. With the recent release of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the hype that comes with every Google phone it makes for the Galaxy S III to have a hard time getting popular.

Samsung Galaxy S3 screen

The Samsung Galaxy S3 will sport a huge 4.6 inch screen bigger than the 4.3 inch screen of the Galaxy S II. Samsung accidently leaked that it would release phones in 2012 with the new flexible glass specifically; FOLED technology. This would make for an interesting concept coupled with the rumored 4.6 inch screen and 1280×720 resolution of the Galaxy S III. Reasons why Samsung have chosen to use the OLED/FOLED screen technology is it uses less power and it also allows for the screen to be curved which is something new.

Samsung Galaxy S III and Android

The Samsung Galaxy S III will obviously run Google’s Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which featured a big database (but not bigger than Apple’s) of applications and games to download. Despite the Android market not having as much applications as the Apple market the Operating system is open source meaning there will be way more customization allowable.

Samsung Galaxy S3 camera

The Galaxy S3 will likely to have a whopping 12 MP camera (MP is merely one factor out of a dozen) which surpasses the Galaxy S2′s 8MP rear facing camera. But Samsung is going to do something innovative — it looks as if the Samsung Galaxy S3 will have a 1/2.3-inch sensor. That’s much bigger than the 1/3.2-inch CMOS chip found in many phones, including the iPhone 4S. To give you an idea of how that can impact image quality, check out another device using a 1/2.3-inch chip: the ultra-stylish £500 Pentax Q system camera.

Galaxy S3 features

Here is a summary of the features which are rumored to be available on the Samsung Galaxy S3 via CNET

  • 4.6-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen at 1,280×720-pixel resolution
  • 1.8GHz chip with 2GB RAM for zippy multitasking and games
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich with a refreshed TouchWiz skin
  • Camera-quality 12-megapixel photos
  • Styled like the Galaxy Nexus

And here’s what we’re hoping for:

  • A flexible OLED screen on a jaw-dropping curved chassis
  • TouchWiz mini apps that put social networking front and centre
  • Ultra-high ISO photography so we don’t even need to use the sickly built-in LED flash

  1. gagan says:

its great but i think samsung also its battery life the only big biggest need also is the battey i think inbuild battery will also great option may be phone will some thick (fatty)
now that will beat the iphone 5

    • admin says:

I personally want it to have an SD card :( , i hate having in built memory as there is no real versatility. Battery is okay, but the stronger the phones get (quadcore, larger resolution etc) the more power they use up; lets just hope they can keep the battery up to par!

      • braidonh says:

A common misconception about processors is that they use more power per core. While certainly this is true if 2 cores ran at the same speed as one core (1Ghz+1Ghz vs 1Ghz) If both cores ran at 500Mhz to equal the clock speed of the single core, the dual core processor would consume exponentially less power. This is because the higher the clock speed goes, power is consumed at an exponentially increasing rate. So depending on the efficiency of Samsung’s new Exynos processor, battery consumption may actually be better when compared to single and dual core phones. This coupled with the way ICS handles tasks. The SGSIII is going to be an absolute beast. Gonna have to put my SII on eBay ;)

      • Rich says:

I’m pretty certain that this phone, along with almost all other Android phones on the market these days will have an MicroSD card available for users. That’s a basic feature these days, pretty much.

    • fkgrh says:

im sorry, but i dont think the above comment makes any sense

      • Martin says:

Clearly it makes perfect sense, it’s just the tiniest bit technical. If you did any technology research at all maybe you wouldn’t sound so uneducated.

        • Anonymoose says:

No, it isn’t in the slightest nor is it informed either. The Galaxy Nexus, just released BY SAMSUNG for Google has no removable SD card memory at all. So clearly IT ISN’T “a basic feature these days, pretty much.”

I would never buy a smartphone without it, but apparently Google thinks users should not have removable memory cards as the last TWO ‘Nexus’ phones have now not had this “basic” feature you cite.

  2. Gary M. says:

The SGS3 as described seems to represent the one Droid that will feature the latest in collective smartphone technology. The others make boisterous claims but offer ICS with a 5 MP camera, a bullet-proof body with Gingerbread and others with slower power hungry processors. So, I’m waiting for either SGS3 or iPhone 5 (might be traveling abroad in July). These appear to be the “quantum leap” phones and not just the media-hyped pretenders that are recycling old and new technology to boost sales in the interim.

  3. Ozukeza says:

I think it’s very very expensive too

  4. Tyler says:

Galaxy S3 will be the ultimate phone. Honestly, I hate Apple. Their “customability” = none at all. All their phones are the same size, their are no overlays. They have “retina displays” that give you headaches. An insufficient amount of RAM doesn’t help. And their batteries suck. The Galaxy S3 will kick the IPhone 4S, and the Iphone 5′s butt.

    • nomis says:

i simply hate it when people underastimate or bash telephone brands that they dont like or dont own a phone of that brand. and your comment is really funny ^_^ why would the retina display give u a headache? – are u not familliar or unhappy with the display that has no shown pixels so the display experience is better ?? ^_^ im probably gonna buy SG3, and that doesnt mean i hate Apple or any other brand …

  5. Nick says:

Definatley will be getting a Samsung Galaxy SIII Phone when they come out even if i have to go abroad for it.

  6. fuck says:

yeah samsung doing great surpassing apple and htc

  7. Emad Fayez sabbah says:

i would definitely love to get a phone with these specs.
currently i have a samsung galaxy s I9000 and i’m not very satisfied with it.
i think galaxy siii will be my next.

  8. Matt says:

Wow, if these specs end up being in the final product, this will be my next phone. It sounds like it will be exactly what I’m looking for – HD screen with a decent camera. Just hope it doesn’t feel plasticy, as samsung phones tend to.

    • michael says:

I have had a sgs since they hit the market, and have dropped it on tiles and concrete and then kicked it across the road trying to pick it up! More than thirty times.

I like how light and strong that ‘plasticy’ body is and it doesn’t shatter like certain phones.

I don’t care how they make it look and feel, I’m a phone klutz and I don’t want it to break.

I can’t decide on the sgs iii or the sg note. Maybe I want an sgs iii with a s-pen.

      • jamie says:

I agree!! Alot of people saying the s2 doesnt have a premium feel who cares it looks and works like a premium phone and can handle an accidental drop whereas people love the feel of the iphone but let it fall out of your hand and all there is going to be is tears because your phone is shattered on the ground theres nothing premium about that!! I would also love an s3 with the s pen it looks cool but the note is just 2 big for me then again id also love the projector from the new samsung beam in the s3 but i cant see that happening might just have to get the beam the galaxy note 10.1 and the s3 they would be the perfect companions!!

  9. its great but i think samsung also its battery life the only big biggest

  10. Wattah says:

    Samsung Galaxy S3 off course!

iphones just don’t get along in the smartphone world. apple’s very good in advertizing, but not in building phones. drop it ones and it breaks. unlock it and you’ll have to wait. customize it, oh wait… you CAN’T…….

  11. okli says:

agree with Gery M SGS3 against iPhone 5
the battle of the titans in July
    everybody is waiting for
how ever iP5 is unbeatable in coolness…
    DUDE

  12. Andy.RD says:

4.6-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen – Personally TOO BIG, have mercy on our
    pockets.
Size:4.0 ~ 4.3 inch max – otherwise why not buy a Galaxy Note or a tablet
It will look foolish for a sleek smartphone (my view)

    1,280×720-pixel resolution – Excellent !
1.8GHz chip with 2GB RAM for zippy – Excellent ! processing speed + Ram; the more the
    better

Multitasking and games – Excellent ! + More games just like Apple’s
Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich – Excellent ! ICS has good resource management
Refreshed TouchWiz skin – Good ! + Not too much Bloat-ware please.

    Camera-quality 12-megapixel photos – Excellent ! 12 mgp , let’s hope its a good
    competitor for 2012
Styled like the Galaxy Nexus – Don’t mind a sleek look but don’t want the Galaxy
Nexus bulge on the back cover. The current
Galaxy S2 shape is good enough.
    Finally – If One is to spend £400 ~ £500 on a
smartphone then it’d better meet some of
    these points as a minimum.

    • Nic says:

Remember that with the introduction of virtual buttons rather than physical buttons, there will be less physical space around the screen meaning that although the screen size is increasing, the phone size is actually not increasing by that much. If the whole front of my s2 was screen, then it would be 5 inches.

  13. zeesh77 says:

Totally getting the S3. And i would totally disregard battery problems. Get an extra charger for work. And a car charger. All under $70. And your golden. Plus not to worry about the charging cycles because you change your battery anytime (which is rarely the case) for under $40. And you make full use of the phone every time ;)

  14. Dave says:

Samsung Galaxy S3. The one smartphone to rule it all.

  15. Mark w says:

Sgs3 all the way!! spec for spec its a stand alone winner!!

  16. Darcey says:

I will probably be upgrading to this, the 4s is already surpassed by the galaxy s2, I expect something great from the S3.

What I think of the rumored specs?
    1. CPU sounds good, is this dual core?
    2. Screen size larger than S2, nice :)
    3. 12 Megapixel camera – don’t care about anything over 8 megapixel, just improve picture quality and blur handling.
    4. Amoled screen – Would rather them use the OLED even if flat to save battery
    5. 2GB of ram, very nice and about time.. My S1 has something silly like 328mb which is always around 70% used at base, not clever.

What I would like to see for my money:
    1. Internal memory is interchangable high speed flash memory
    2. Internal and external support high speed large size flash memory cards
    3. Same design as the S2 but no more flimsy plastic back
    4. Accessible boot and close down sounds and animation logos (would save a lot of people rooting their phones to change this)
    5. Battery life on my S1 is 1 day if i don’t use it, 1/2 a day when in use, would be good to improve this.

    • Blum says:

      battery life for the SGS 1 : intenssive use 3-4 hours :) )) i also have an s2 it’s a slightly improvement

      • michael says:

I bought a 3500ma battery and my intensive went from 4 hours to all day :D
Comes with a larger back. The extra weight and shape make the phone a delight to hold, less drops from the slippery curved back it came with.

  17. Yemi Shittu says:

Samsung if you really want to stay ahead of Apple and the rest, please just integrate DVB-H into your upcoming Galaxy S-III, retain the FM radio and the .mkv format, assassinate me if you wouldn’t sell a billion units in less than year.

  18. lucernumpagoti says:

if you know how to kill those apps that you opened then you will save battery. turn off the automatic syncing so ur not using data always. being smart saves battery.

    • Hmm says:

I can’t kill those apps, they just keep coming back after u kill them.. That’s the most basic and important flaw with the Android OS. Who gives a hoot abt full customization. Apple does that just fine and u don’t get twlauncher type error messages as u do with Samsung.

  19. cecille says:

i will buy the SIII for me and my family and i will force my friends to buy it

no more i phone its galaxy era

  20. Teddy says:

Open system would be popular, closed system is not
    perpect,finally.

although samsung’s brand is not win apple, but
it corporate with google, with strong support.

I believe samsung is winner finally.
    I chose galaxy s3

  21. Max says:

Definitely getting the SGS3 not the iPhone 5, I am highly disappointed by what Apple has shown us lately, the 4S was a joke, just because 3G to 3GS worked doesn’t mean Apple can keep this up, nowadays there is much more competition and the competition surpassed Apple in any way, Google’s Android system allows the user to do more things, and the hardware is much more useful I would never go back to a tiny 3.5″ screen again.
The only thing Apple still has an advantage in is the look of the apps, they are prettier, but honestly as long as everything works well I don’t really care how pretty it looks as long as it’s functional.

  22. jorgemsn says:

I love EVERY aspect that this phone is supposed to have. The only thing that will keep me from getting it is the Galaxy Nexus design. I don’t like the design very much, and I prefer the original rectangular design better. Also, they should release it in black AND white from the beginning (:

  23. Biggsy says:

Jeez! Yet another BIGGER phone! When will manufacturers understand we don’t all want to carry Kindle size pieces of kit in our pockets! :s Can’t we have a high spec, long battery life 4.0 – 4.3 inch screen phone instead??

    • michael says:

The problem with being on the extreme edge trying to squish all this tech into tinier spaces is it all takes room and uses electricity, which generates heat so they need a certain amount of space just for dissipation, as well as antenna and other considerations.

In a couple of years this will all be normalized, and you’ll be able to get it in a 3.5″ iphone. :D

And hey, some of us like the bigger screens, I want the galaxy note! or the sgs iii with the s-pen

  24. Invisible says:

One feature of Samsung phones I WILL NOT COMPROMISE:

    1. ULTRA-LOW SAR LEVELS!

So please Samsung keep this up. Personally I will stick to my Galaxy S2 regardless of whatever new features come up unless SAR levels are still low.

Features that have importance in priority (not an exhaustive list):

    2. Battery life… my galaxy s2 goes for 34 hours. Anything below 24 wont be preferable.

    3. Acceptable headset/speaker volumes. What good in being a phone if you have low call/handsfree/music volumes? You see Galaxy S2 sort of disappointed me in that sense. In call volume should be higher. Same for the speaker for handsfree calls AND music.

    4. Expandable storage… unless its something along the lines of 64gb internal storage, no sd, card no way. If you are going to be one of those companies who decide to ditch the sd card so people will pay more for high internal storage (16gb version, 32gb version etc)… your losses will surpass you gains in the long term.

    5. Performance… you know, processor speed, ram and graphics etc. Speaking of, if that is 1.8ghz single core for the S3, there is no way anyone is going to be convinced that it’s better than the S2.

    6. Sensors that actually work… we’ve seen so many phones that fail on navigation because of poor GPS sensors.

    7. Android platform… until something better comes along.

    8/9. Aesthetics OR Display…

That being said, I believe Samsung is going to be faced with very strong competition from Sony (they bought Ericsson’s shares so no more Sony Ericsson, just Sony). I mean iPhone will not be a worry no more when Sony comes along. Samsung has to really push the envelope and act in advance against Sony.

  25. Uday says:

What more to expect from a phone???
Anything more than this is sheer greediness!!!

  26. Hubert says:

    Galaxy s3 4.6′ ?
I have Galaxy sII and it is certainly too big.
I will not buy bigger phone than 4′
Samsung should produce galaxy s series with 4′ screen and galaxy note for a freaks :P

  27. Jason says:

I like the specs but how about Nvidia Tegra 3 GPU in it aswell? 64GB internal storage like Apple’s Iphone 4S & 32GB – 64GB SD Card Slot support & some decent Audio chip not like Yamaha DAC that was used in Samsung Galaxy S II (sound so bad) display is good but put more ppi for example better than Galaxy Nexus so it must be 330 ppi or more & give option to enable or disable touchwiz so those who want to use stock android can use stock & those who want to use Touchwiz can use it, more options more happy customers anywayz I am waiting to buy SGS3 in 2012 & I hope it will be the King Of Smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S2 was in 2011. Cheers

  28. prakash says:

I currently use Galaxy S II and I am proud to own it. oh boy, its a wonderful companion. Now that S III is on its way to the market, I believe it would become “The best smartphone on the planet”. I am looking forward for this phone and I will definitely have one once it is out.

  29. Willie says:

I have a galaxy s captivate and I have not changed my phone waiting for galaxy s 3

  30. Adam says:

Though I develop for both (and will get the GS3) folks that go “wow specs better than Apple… better” are a bit lame. Sorry, but Apple has a far better, well thought out UX (this is my industry) and due to the platform even with lower spec hardware runs much more silky…

Specboys would rather have a pig with big breasts than a supermodel with smaller breasts because the pig has “better specs”

    • Rahul says:

The iOS sucks. The screen is too small, with no bluetooth and microsd slot! I can’t download anything from outside of the itunes. How can you like so many restrictions? If you really want to use a phone at peace, buy an android phone like galaxy s2 or xperia arc. Use the android device for a year and I can bet you will never want to go back to the tiny iphone again :)

      • Hmm says:

Most people aren’t hackers or tinker with their SMARTphone with custom roms and OS.

      • Hmm says:

I can’t wait to go back to iphone. Using galaxy s1. But I might not bcuz the screen is rumoured to be very close to. The same size as the previous versions. A 4 inch screen is just too small.

    • Hmm says:

Why are u getting the G3 if ios runs better? Your post makes u sound like a hypocrite.

  31. Aidan says:

I have the S2 and its an awesome phone. The S3 is going to be fantastic as well. I’m expecting so much from that camera even when the light conditions are poor. I hope they improve the battery performance, thats probably my only small gripe with the S2.

This will be the first phone that will have everything I ever wanted in a smartphone. I’d like a projector so that I can beam videos and pics onto a wall to show my friends. Maybe we will get that when the S4 comes along!

  32. vanessa says:

i had all the iphones and omg i hated every single one of them then i got into samsung omg i love these phones cant wait to get my hands on this asap hope they release it sooner

  33. dj says:

The screen size will be 4.8 and not 4.6

  34. Nigga says:

That’s awesome !! But we need some improvements !!! like built in battery like iphone!!
i hate iphone and apple sucks !!
Samsung Galaxy S III will be my next phone !! (L)

  35. CedricMelanchon says:

    Hello,

I’m an HTC addict, i have an HTC desire Z for years and i’m not impressed by Samsung phone’s ! HTC have a great experience with Android by the way, their products are very mature and this is why Apple attacks HTC, because it’s a serious concurrent and Samsung has to be carreful with Apple, this company is totally unfair and unscrupulous…

  36. Huzmohd says:

After 8 months of using the S2 daily & for the past 2 months trying to find a “good replacement” nothing beats this monster of a phone!!! When i look at anyone using the iPhone i wonder is it that they have tunnel vision or are they plain dumb??

What a phone…..if i know Samsung well they will be giving us one hell of a surprise with the S3.

For the people who complain about battery life….its a smartphone, it does so many things at one time give it a break. I have 2 batteries and from 5am to about 8pm it lasts on one and after that i switch over. I think this is pretty good with the amount of stuff i throw at it.

  37. my says:

I’m wondering if the Samsung Galaxy S III screen would be fragile or not? I have the Samsung Galaxy Vibrant. I don’t know what kind of screen it has. It has endured more than a year of abuse (without a case). I’m a total clutz so I drop my phone at least twice a day.

  38. Harry says:

I am waiting be a proud owner of an S3 since the i’ve heard it would be released. The features pretty much suit my usage.

  39. Lejonell says:

If it’s shaped like the nexus, im NOT buying it. The Nexus is FUGLY!

  40. Johnno says:

I don’t really understand all the bitching about which is better..

Both Android and iPhone have good and bad points. I had an android phone and while it was very customisable, it crashes a lot and it was buggy. The iPhone is a lot simpler and doesn’t crash as often but not that customisable and more expensive (unless i jailbreak).

Now for the galaxy s3, the features seem awesome but i agree with people that i’m probably not getting it if its over 4 inches, thats just a bit too big

  41. GoodFella says:

Clearly noone here has heard about the SONY XPERIA S.see it and say bye bye to samsung and apple. SONY is here !! :)

  42. matts ksa says:

i was an ardent apple phone user untill samsung came up with their smartphones. amazingly this is the bedt phone available in the market today. i dumped my i phones and am now using galaxy note. no complsints and very happy with it. increfible picture quality which iphone can never match. eagerly waiting for the galaxy s3 launch
